The floor sander is a home improvement dream, turning an otherwise onerous and backbreaking job into something quick, straightforward and - if you approach it with the right attitude - a whole lot of fun. There is nothing quite so satisfying when preparing a floor to stand back at the end of the job and observe a perfectly smooth and sanded finish, and that's the kind of effect that is hard to achieve with anything other than an automated floor sander machine. If you are hiring one for the day, here are five things you need to know to get the most out of the experience.
1. What's a floor sander?
For those who don't know, a floor sander is a motorized device for sanding wooden surfaces to a smooth finish and typically used on interior wooden floors such as parquet and block tiles.

2. When to use one
Floor sanders are typically used for commercial flooring applications, e.g. to prepare a wooden floor for varnishing or other finishing. It can be used both on a brand new wooden floor, to give extra sheen to the finish and reduce grain, or to revitalize an old floor that has roughened or accumulated stains over the years.
3. Clear the room
Sanding the floor is best done when the room is entirely empty. This includes books, drapes and anything else that can accumulate sawdust. Clear all furniture, or allow for extra time if you need to sand under and around furniture that for whatever reason it would be too much work to remove (i.e. a grand piano). Also, cover anything remaining in the room with dust sheets.
4. Apply even pressure
While the floor sander is easy to operate, you have to bear in mind that for the best finish, even pressure has to applied and each inch of wood has to be sanded equally. Let the machine do the work rather than forcing it, and try to work either in straight lines or in even sweeping motions.
5. Save labor time with a vacuum
Many modern floor sanders come with attached vacuum bags which suck up all the sawdust as it is created. This is the ideal solution if you are short of time and fussy about sawdust. If not using a vacuum attachment, sweep regularly between each sanding to ensure that on subsequent passes you are not grinding loose sawdust into the floor.
